What if the POI had a cell phone of his own?  Doesn't almost everyone?

If LE could check cell phone company records to show that Rob Allen's phone was indeed pinging at a certain tower down in Fort Lauderdale, could they ever turn the situation around?

Could they see what tower is pinged by the cell phones in the HOG region?  (I just read up on this.  The towers are roughly anywhere from half a mile to a mile apart.)   Then take the list of all the pings for that tower from Jan 24, 2006.  That's got to be thousands in that one mile radius, especially because cars are driving by.

But they could do a test.    Check how long a cell phone stays on the HOG tower if it is in a car driving by on Americana.  It is going to be something like a couple of minutes before it gets picked up by the next tower down the road.

Then LE could look on the list for cell phones that began pinging on the HOG tower after 12:55, just before the POI drove up.  That would be a couple hundred.

But since the POI is walking  away from the region, and cars are are driving away from the region, cross off all phones that only pinged for a few minutes.

You'd be left with just a handful of phones that that match the criteria.  Maybe even only one.

Just a thought.

I thought the same thing. I am not sure how feasible it would be. But tracking the pings to where Jennifer's phone last pinged and cross referencing it to the cell tower that is closest to HOG at noon when POI was in the vicinity. Not sure if Law Enforcement looked into it. Not sure if they are still available.

Coem to think of it we  have not been told when or where Jennifer's phone last pinged.l THat information is crucial to this investigation to provide soemwhat of a timeline and it was never released. Not sure why becuase it could be helpful incase someone was in the vicinity and saw someone or something.
In Charlotte NC, Kyle Fleishman went missing from a night club and the police immediately released what cell tower and time his phone last pinged to see if any witnesses were in the area.
Absolutely ridculous that information is not out yet, In my opinion, Law enforcement cannot afford to just sit on the info they have. Release it to the media/public

Jessica, great point.  Where did her cell phone last ping?  Critical to understanding this crime.

Suppose it was turned off the night before at 10 pm.  The next thing to do is check in the weeks prior, maybe Jen always turns off her phone everynight before bed.  When does she turn it on normally...  say 6 AM?  Did it go on at 6 AM on Jan 24th?

On and on... so many interesting questions concerning her cell phone.

My understanding is this would be so easy to find out.  The power of computerized records and the over reach of the Patriot Act.

JD  ... because Jennifer was so safety concious and carried mace etc. I bet she never turned off phone at night. I can imagine she charges it before bedtime right next to her. I know that is what i did when I lived alone and still do now that I am  married. I can't imagine Jenn powering off her phone ever. Her family lived in a different city and so did her boyfriend so she would need that lifeline 24/7. If her phone was powered off and at whatever time it occured I am certain it would of been POI turning it off. That information is critical to understanging when this could of occured and giving us a time frame and location. You never know who could of been in that mile radius of the phone pinging last

Come to think of it, if you look at the photos of Jen's apartment, there is no land-line phone visible in any of the rooms.  Maybe her cell phone was her one and only phone.  I see more and more people doing this - just a cell phone, nothing else.  Which would add to the suggestion she always leaves her cell phone on.

So again it is critical to know exactly when the phone was turned off and what tower it was pinging that morning, which would suggest a path of motion.

Excellent point that POI would have turned off Jenn's cell phone.

In the picture of Jenn's living room there is a cordless phone on top of the entertainment center - I think it's black. I'm pretty sure I read that she did have a landline.

jd and Jessica, I believe you both have the right idea on the pings, when the phone was turned off would be crucial. We need to know if she did leave her phone on at night and what time it went off, this would indeed tell a very big story. I was told she used it for an alarm clock so it stands to reason it should of been on all night. Questions, Questions, Questions.

This was a good thread that just died.
The files will hold a lot of information on the pings. Also, the cell phone that was left behind might well have been pinging too.

Any activity on Jenner's landline has not been disclosed.

In the early days searchers were asked to look out for Jennifer's car keys, cell phone and other belongings. As we know none of these were ever found.
Not that we are aware of anyway.

The police have to be holding back something. We just don't know what they have.
